So, you’ve decided that you’d like to give pole dancing a try. There are a few things you’ll need to sort out before you venture out into the exciting world of pole dancing for fitness and fun!

First, you’ll need to decide if you are going to take classes or try it out in your home. Say you’ve decided that since you enjoy the company of others and want an encouraging environment that you’re going to take lessons. You’re going to need to look around for a place that offers lessons in your area. The easiest way is to do a quick search on the internet, but you can also have a look at fitness centers in your phone book and inquire if they offer lessons.

After you’ve found a place that offers lessons, you may want to inquire about pricing and even sit in for a session to sample the atmosphere and teaching style. It’s important to get a feel of the environment and people that you would be learning with; your comfort should be priority when choosing a class. If you like the class, you may decide to commit to a routine.

Maybe you’re uncomfortable taking a class or can’t fit your schedule around it. No problem—with the variety of instructional DVD’s and at-home pole kits on the market, you can easily set up your own pole dancing studio at home!

The most important items you will need are a pole and an instructional DVD. There are so many different types of both that it may seem a little daunting at first. It might be a good idea to look at the removable poles—that way you don’t have to make any expensive and long-term changes to your home. Most removable (therefore, portable!) poles take about 5 minutes to assemble once you get the idea of it. There is a great kit from Pole Aerobics World offering a sturdy, portable pole, carry case, and instructional DVD for $99.99.

If you have never tried pole dancing before, try to look for a beginner DVD; one that will work slowly until you build up your skills. A highly-rated DVD is Pole Cats I – Beginning Pole Dancing–which costs around $30. Just have a look around a well-known site such as Amazon for “Pole Dancing DVD”. Usually, the most reliable source is the user reviews, as they are real people—like you—and are more apt to give honest opinions of the product.

That’s about all you’ll need to do pole dancing from home! Whether you decide to take classes or wing it in your own roost, remember to warm up properly and wear comfortable, but fitted clothes, as baggy clothing can get in the way. Also, keep yourself hydrated and remember to take breaks as you need them. Although it’s a great way to have fun, pole dancing is also a workout and you should be careful to pace yourself. Have fun and enjoy your new activity!
